As a way to celebrate our anniversary, Acquisitions Editor Randy Schmidt reached out to fifty UBC Press authors and asked them to talk about their favourite UBC Press book. This is what we heard.

UBC Press has not hesitated to publish feminist critiques of the law. Defending Battered Women on Trial: Lessons from the Transcripts (2014) has quickly become a classic work on abused women. Elizabeth Sheehy explores eleven trials in rich detail – ten of which were for women who killed their abusive partners – and illuminates the legal dilemmas battered women face in court. The stories she tells are heartbreaking; sadly, the book is every bit as relevant today as it was at the time of writing. Legally detailed, but accessible to a wide audience, Defending Battered Women on Trial remains essential reading.

Lori Chambers is a professor of Gender and Women's Studies at Lakehead University and a co-author, with Nadia Verrelli, of No Legal Way Out: R v Ryan, Domestic Abuse, and the Defence of Duress (UBC Press, 2021)
