OTHER WAYS TO ORDER

About the Book

The Templars were members of a monastic order established in 1099 after the success of the First Crusade. Enjoying the support of both the Church and the laity and vowed to poverty, chastity and obedience, these 'fighting monks' were the vital defenders of the holy places of the Latin States in Palestine and Syria. Their power and influence grew to the extent that by the end of the thirteenth century they had become landowners with properties across western Christendom, bankers to monarchs and nobles, and ship owners capable of transporting pilgrims, animals and supplies across the Mediterranean.

However, in 1307 members of the Order in France were suddenly arrested and accused of denying Christ, abusing the Cross, sodomy, and idol worship. The motive for this was ostensibly by Inquisition, but in reality the arrests were on the orders of the French king, Philip IV. Many confessions were extracted under torture and only a spirited defence in 1309-10 prevented the French Crown from precipitating their immediate demise. Eventually, in 1392, Pope Clement V dissolved the Order at the Council of Vienna, and its assets were transferred to Hospitallers.

This is a unique collection of translated sources, which in addition to documenting the origins of the Order and the circumstances of its suppression and dissolution, examines the many and varied facets of its activities during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. It will be of interest to anyone interested in the medieval period, and is an invaluable source for those wanting to find out more about this most fascinating and enigmatic of institutions.
