About the Book

This book is a comprehensive, analytical study of the way the mind/ body dichotomy has perpetuated social hierarchy on the basis of gender. It challenges the tradition of dualism and argues that the term 'rational woman' is possible - it is not a contradiction in terms. Having investigated the two major dualisms contained in the term 'rational woman', the author develops an argument for a new relational conception of all the terms involved in 'rational woman', emphasising the relationship of interdependence of reason and emotion, man and woman, rather than placing these terms in hierarchical and polarised opposition.

The book is primarily concerned with the contrast between reason and emotion, and the role of emotion on rationality. The basic proposition put forward by Prokhovnik is that all these terms - reason, emotion, rationality - need reconceptualising, as a plausible idea and a fruitful conjunction.

In many ways, the book builds on previous feminist analyses to show that dichotomous thinking in which woman is seen as a subordinate term can be identified historically. The way forward is not to positively affirm the feminine, but to recognise the extended meanings of the terms reason and emotion, man and woman.

Second wave feminism is discussed in depth, as is the intellectual backlash against it, and the author makes the case that the future of feminism lies in the emergence of a third wave, bringing with it a relational, non-dichotomous mode of thinking and approach to social values.

Available in paperback for the first time, this book makes a significant contribution to the literature on gender politics, political and feminist theory, sociology and philosophy.
