50 Years, 50 Books: Sapphistries

Posted: Wednesday, April 27, 2022

As a way to celebrate our anniversary, Acquisitions Editor Randy Schmidt reached out to fifty UBC Press authors and asked them to talk about their favourite UBC Press book. This is what we heard.

Leila Rupp, professor of feminist studies, and her partner and collaborator, Verta Taylor, became known as the professors of lesbian love. Sapphistries, an elegantly written and expansive history, ranges from stories of ancient Greece, to twentieth-century lesbian women’s experiences in Berlin and Buffalo, to Indonesian women’s experiences. Rupp had the courage to write a history of women who desired and loved other women, in an international context, at a time when sexuality studies were just starting to become “mainstream.” And, UBC Press had the courage to publish it, which produced greater visibility into lesbian history.

Pam Ratner is the UBC Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President, Faculty Planning. A champion of UBC Press, she served on the Publications Board between 2006 and 2016.
