Nature on the Edge traces the history of nature conservation in two international biosphere reserves on the California Coast, Golden Gate and Channel Islands Biosphere Reserves. It describes the natural history, ecology, and evolution of key species and ecosystems in scientifically sound but accessible language, and explains that despite all we know, fascinating ecological mysteries still abound. It profiles individuals who led successful conservation efforts and who model the effectiveness of value-based, individual action. It also explores alternative, ecologically centered philosophies and worldviews rooted in these places, and argues for their importance in transforming our currently unsustainable societies and reestablishing a healthy human-nature relationship.
Bruce Byers is an ecologist, writer, and independent consultant, working to inform and inspire a more ecologically sustainable relationship between all people and our home planet. He is the author of The View from Cascade Head: Lessons for the Biosphere from the Oregon Coast (OSU Press, 2020). He lives in Fall Church, Virginia.
